ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

Working with the theme ‘opposites attract’ provides plenty of scope for artistic problem solving, perceptually and conceptually.

Perceptually, ‘opposites’ can give a ‘frisson’ when contrasts are used eg. contrasting material and textures are applied to complementary colour systems or large and small scales are played off one another. Value contrasts are used with opposing compositional lines while a combination of abstraction and realism is also exploited.

Conceptually, these ‘opposites’ are manipulated to express a unified idea. Existing calmness within a landscape is interrupted by the arrival of chaotic conflict, small figures standing in a large public place invite the viewer into private moment or to share a memory of an ever-changing neighbourhood.
